Milia Spots
Milia is a common skin condition characterized by small white bumps (cysts) beneath the skin’s surface. Approximately 40% to 50% of newborns in the U.S. experience milia. Adults can also develop this condition. Treatment is typically unnecessary, as milia are harmless and tend to resolve on their own within a few weeks.
Milia (milk spots) are small, white cysts that form under the surface of your skin. These cysts are commonly found on the face. Unlike whiteheads, which are a type of acne, milia are not acne. They are harmless and only affect your appearance.
There are different types of milia, including:
– Neonatal Milia: This type affects infants, causing white cysts to form on a baby’s skin, most often on or around their nose. Neonatal milia are present at birth.
– Primary Milia: These small cysts are common on the eyelids, forehead, cheeks, or genitals and can affect both children and adults.
– Secondary Milia (Traumatic Milia): These cysts occur after skin damage, such as burns, rashes, blisters, or sun exposure. They can also form as a reaction to heavy skin creams or ointments.
– Juvenile Milia: These cysts are a symptom of an inherited condition and can be present at birth or develop later in life.
– Milia en Plaque: This rare type often affects women or people assigned female at birth between the ages of 40 and 60. The milia clump together on a raised patch of skin, usually behind the ears, on the eyelid, cheek, or jaw.
– Multiple Eruptive Milia: This rare condition causes groups of cysts to form over weeks to months on the face, upper arms, and upper abdomen, and they can be itchy.
