Stretch Marks
Stretch marks are a type of scar that form when the skin stretches or shrinks quickly. This rapid change causes the collagen and elastin, which support the skin, to break down. As the skin heals, stretch marks can appear.
However, not everyone gets stretch marks. Fluctuating hormone levels seem to contribute to their development, and you may be more prone to them if your family members have stretch marks.
You are most likely to develop stretch marks during:
– Growth spurts in puberty
– Pregnancy
– Rapid weight loss or gain
– Weight training with rapid muscle growth
When stretch marks first appear, they are usually red, purple, pink, reddish-brown, or dark brown, depending on your skin colour. Early stretch marks may feel slightly raised and can be itchy.
Over time, the colour fades and the narrow bands sink beneath the skin.
