Verrucas, or plantar warts, are caused by the Human Papilloma virus (HPV), which enters the skin through cuts or abrasions. Specific strains of HPV are responsible for the formation of verrucas, particularly on the soles of the feet. They are contagious and can spread from person to person through direct contact or indirectly via contaminated surfaces.

Several factors increase the likelihood of contracting the HPV virus and developing verrucas. These include walking barefoot in public areas, having a weakened immune system, and prolonged exposure to moisture or friction on the skin. Taking steps to address these risk factors and maintaining good hygiene practices can help reduce the chances of contracting HPV and developing verrucas.
